Is wireless solution TPCast worth your money! From Baidu VR

One of the big VR themes at CES this year is wireless VR. Most companies can't launch products that users really want or can afford, but the next step in the development of desktop-level VR is to cut cables and achieve true wireless VR. The only company that has officially launched the product is Vive X's Beijing Transmission Technology TPCast, which is not surprising given their close relationship with HTC.

Just spend RMB 1499 or $ 249, and you can make Vive wireless. But the only question that needs to be considered is whether the product is really worth the price.

1. Strictly not true wireless

To use TPCast, you need to perform a few extra steps. The kit needs to be mounted on the top of the headband to replace the current 3-in-1 cable. There are two cables behind the kit that need to be connected to the battery to power the device.

It should be noted that TPCast not only replaces the video signal, but also needs to provide power for the head display and is responsible for transmitting the data from the head-mounted sensor to the PC. This means that the kit needs to handle large amounts of data on its own, and endurance is also very important.

The 6000mAh battery will be clipped to your belt. Although there is still cable, you can move freely and the sense of restraint is not strong. However, you will feel extra weight, and the battery is not light and cannot simply hang on the belt. So the first step before wearing your head is to fix the battery on your body. After everything is ready, you can put on your head and enjoy the VR world as usual.

2. Even if there is a performance difference, you will not notice

Your HTC Vive contains two high-resolution monitors that need to always provide consistent video transmission. If a monitor is out of sync, or if there is a delay, this will greatly affect the VR experience. Driving these displays with HDMI guarantees a certain level of performance, and wireless transmissions can have several potential points of failure, which can lead to a poor VR experience. No matter how good a VR wireless transmission solution is, this is an unavoidable problem. The possibility of wireless interference is greater than the possibility of damage to the HDMI cable.

But if all goes well, you shouldn't notice the difference between the TPCast wireless transmission scheme and the connection experience. Under normal circumstances, the experience brought by TPCast is very realistic and cool. You can move around freely and sway your body more exaggeratedly, which means that you can escape the enemy's attacks more naturally like the real world. In conjunction with the new Tracker system launched by HTC, you will soon feel that the VR experience is almost the same as the real world.

3. What to wait for

Although TPCast will be the first choice for listing, it is not difficult to find that more similar products will soon appear in the market. Xiaobian reported as early as October that Valve also invested in a wireless team, Nitero, in hopes of integrating wireless VR into its virtual reality product range, so Valve might use this as the default wireless solution in the future. In addition, according to vrheads, HTC has discussed a WiGig partnership, which may provide another option for Vive users.

When TPCast goes on the market, you can buy it as you wish. This is not a necessary device unless you really hate the original cable of Vive. TPCast is a good solution, especially for the first attempt to wireless VR. But it is worth mentioning that TPCast still has many restrictions, such as only two hours of battery life, and you need to fix a heavy battery on your body.

If you have been waiting for Vive to be wireless, TPCast is definitely a worthwhile product to explore. If you are willing to wait, Xiao Bian believes that this device will continue to be optimized in the next few years. You may find yourself preferring a more simplified option in the future.
