Subtone is an audio signal with a lower frequency, such as the more commonly used 88.5 Hz. The function of the subtone is mainly to turn on the squelch, so as to improve the sensitivity and avoid interference and noise. When the transmitting side presses the transmit button, the sub-tone signal is automatically transmitted first. The squelch is turned off before the sub-signal signal is received by the receiving party to avoid noise, and the squelch is turned on after receiving the sub-tone signal, which improves the sensitivity. The receiver and receiver must agree on the same sub-tone frequency, the transmitter must have sub-tone coding function, and the receiver must have sub-tone decoding function.

Subtone is the simple name of "continuous tone control squelch system" -CTCSS-, which is divided into two parts: coding [control] and decoding [controlled]. It is usually used on the relay station to distinguish and filter noise. The relay station of the CTCSS controlled project only responds to the transmitter stations with the same subtone and does not respond to the signals transmitted by the transmitter station without the corresponding subtone. For example, the relay station in Suzhou is currently set to 88.5 subtone, if If your radio station does not have subtone coding, you cannot turn on the repeater. Therefore, in general, when buying radio stations, buying ones with subtones is slightly more useful.


The sub-audio identification code is a signaling identification system used for anti-interference in ultra-short wave communication networks and to prevent non-network users from stealing frequencies into the network. Its working principle is: add a certain sub-audio frequency (non-standard CTCSS) frequency continuous signaling to the modulation part of the transmitter, participate in the modulation at the same time with the speech signal, and then send it out through the power amplifier; The decoder of the corresponding frequency can only be forwarded by the repeater when the corresponding sub-audio identification code appears in the decoder, which plays the role of signaling identification.

The sub-audio identification code is a state signalling identification signal that represents a single tone of different frequencies. In order to improve the reliability of signaling transmission, a frequency lower than 300 Hz is selected and several frequency points are selected as signaling signals to form a sub-audio mark code recognition system.

In layman's terms, it is a continuous audio frequency range lower than the human ear can distinguish. This audio frequency and voice signal are modulated and sent together to control whether the relay is forwarded or not. It is a simple identification method.
