Sina Technology News, Beijing time February 12 morning — Touch feedback technology company Immersion has filed two major legal actions against Apple, accusing the tech giant of infringing on its patents related to haptic feedback systems used in the Apple Watch and iPhone. The move highlights a growing tension between the two companies over intellectual property rights in the mobile technology space. Immersion has taken a dual approach by filing a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) and initiating a patent lawsuit in the Delaware District Court. According to the lawsuit, Apple’s iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, and Apple Watch product lines are allegedly infringing on three key patents related to touch feedback technology. AT&T is also listed as a defendant in both cases. The patents in question include U.S. Patent No. 8,619,051, which covers haptic feedback for user interaction; U.S. Patent No. 8,773,356, which relates to dynamic haptic feedback; and U.S. Patent No. 8,659,571, which involves multi-layered haptic signals. Immersion claims that Apple's devices are using these technologies without proper licensing or compensation. In a statement, Immersion CEO Victor Viegas emphasized the importance of protecting intellectual property: “While we’re pleased to see other industries recognize the value of touch feedback and adopt this technology, we must safeguard our innovations and the ecosystem we’ve built. We are continuously investing in improving the haptic experience, and we will not hesitate to defend our patents when they are infringed.” Apple has long used vibration alerts in its devices, but it significantly enhanced its haptic capabilities with the introduction of the Apple Watch in 2014. Since then, the company has expanded the use of advanced touch feedback across its product line, including the MacBook and MagicTrackpad 2, with the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus offering one of the most sophisticated pressure-sensitive touch experiences available. Immersion is seeking compensation through the legal actions and may push for an import ban on infringing products via the ITC if negotiations fail. This case could set a precedent for how touch feedback technology is licensed and protected in the future.
