# The original innovator # into the pit after seven years — starting with the Kindle Oasis

**Reasons to Purchase** When I was still a student in 2010, I used to count the amount of surplus grain I had in my pocket every day. But everything changed when I first heard about "e-paper books." That's when I really got into the e-reader world. Back then, Kindle wasn't popular in China, and the licensed market was almost nonexistent. The mainstream brands were Hanwang and South Korean MP3 players, but their prices were quite high—usually not less than 1500 RMB. I shrugged it off at the time, thinking I wouldn’t buy one from second-hand markets, but I planted a seed in my heart that would eventually grow. In 2011, after graduating, I joined a joint-venture car company. My first salary came in, and I decided to take the plunge. I bought my first e-book reader from America and Asia — the Kindle Touch. After a long wait, shipping, customs, and handling, it finally arrived. From there, I started experimenting: rooting the system, removing screen saver ads, subscribing to RSS feeds, managing books with Calibre, and so on. For four years, I read nearly a hundred books on the Kindle Touch, including some news and literature. By the end of 2015, due to a job change and getting married, my reading time dropped significantly. To make the most of the device, I gave the Kindle Touch to my neighbor’s sister. I took a break from Kindle for two years, but I never fully left the idea behind. Last year, when the first generation of Oasis was released, I considered buying it, but I hesitated because of the high price and low utilization rate. Plus, online reviews weren’t great, so I held back. Still, I always looked forward to the “surprise” of Kindle’s tenth anniversary. Finally, during National Day, Amazon released a new version of the Oasis — not too surprising, but I decided to go ahead anyway. Although e-book technology might not have made major breakthroughs recently, the most important thing is reading, and hardware doesn’t seem as crucial anymore. On the morning of October 30th, I placed an order on JD.com (because I had a China Merchants Bank card that gave 10 times the points on Wednesdays, and I also ordered some Jingdong E-cards). I received it by noon on the 31st. Before writing this review, I checked the updated comments, and here is the purchase link: **Appearance Gallery** Simple packaging, no different from the first generation of Oasis The specifications confirm it's the new Oasis Amazon’s logo is finally revealed Classic boot screen remains unchanged for years Family portrait — simple design Side view — slim and elegant Back view — minimalist style **Experience Feelings** 1) It's small and lightweight, very easy to hold. Even smaller and lighter than I expected. At the thinnest part, I was worried it might not be able to survive my future abuse. 2) The hardware upgrade is noticeable. Previously, the Kindle Touch had lag while flipping pages and entering Wi-Fi passwords. On the new Oasis, these issues are completely gone. It might be a bit exaggerated to say it's as smooth as a smartphone, but I definitely don’t feel any obvious lag or delay. The built-in reading light has been upgraded, adjusting brightness intelligently and feeling soft and even. The gravity sensor isn’t super useful, but it’s convenient when reading for long periods. The waterproof feature hasn’t come in handy yet, but I don’t think it’s necessary right now. I haven’t had much time to explore the box yet, but I’ll share more thoughts and experiences with you soon. **In Summary** If there's one certainty, it's that the biggest downside is the price. Many people argue that spending the equivalent of a tablet’s cost on a black-and-white screen that only reads books isn’t worth it. I can't deny that point, but I don’t think it should be measured that way. If I need to read, I believe a tablet isn’t the best choice. If you're looking for a reading device, I think this is a solid option that won’t disappoint you — of course, without considering cost-effectiveness.
