Cloud computing is fierce, and Google’s Microsoft Amazon is the industry’s leader.

These three major companies rarely released their quarterly results on the same day, which made it difficult for investors to compare their cloud computing performance directly. However, the data they did provide offered a clear picture of how each company is performing in the fast-growing cloud market. Amazon's AWS continues to lead the pack, as it is the only one of the three to fully disclose its cloud computing revenue and show consistent growth.

On the same day, Microsoft, Amazon, and Google (often referred to as "the Big Three") all announced their third-quarter financial results. The reports revealed that while competition in the cloud space is intensifying, Amazon still holds a significant advantage. This year, AWS is steadily approaching its $18 billion revenue target, showing strong momentum and confidence in its position as the market leader.

Cloud computing is fierce, and Google’s Microsoft Amazon is the industry’s leader.

Microsoft, however, is not standing still. Its Azure cloud platform is experiencing rapid growth, and when combined with Office 365, the company’s commercial cloud division has already reached $20 billion in annual revenue—well ahead of schedule. This demonstrates Microsoft’s strong strategy in integrating cloud services with its core enterprise offerings.

Google Cloud trails behind both Amazon and Microsoft, but the company is clearly investing heavily in the future of cloud computing. Although it doesn’t break out cloud revenue separately, Google has been hiring aggressively in the cloud sector, adding over 2,500 new employees in the last quarter, many of whom are focused on cloud infrastructure and sales.

The battle for dominance in cloud computing is fierce, especially in the area of cloud-based productivity tools. Microsoft’s Office 365 is actively competing with Google’s G Suite, and both companies are pushing to capture more enterprise users with improved features and integration.

Here are some key highlights from this quarter’s earnings reports:

This quarter, Amazon’s AWS revenue hit $4.6 billion, bringing the total for the first three quarters to $12.3 billion. With its current growth rate, hitting the $18 billion target for the year looks highly achievable. In fact, AWS is now Amazon’s most profitable business, underscoring its importance to the company’s overall strategy.

Microsoft didn’t report Azure’s revenue separately, but it did state that Azure grew by an impressive 90% year-over-year. When combined with other cloud services like Office 365, Microsoft’s commercial cloud revenue exceeded $5 billion in the quarter. The company expects its cloud division to reach $20 billion in annual revenue this year. Notably, the enterprise version of Office 365 saw a 42% increase in growth, highlighting the success of its cloud transition.

Google remains the most opaque among the three. It didn’t release specific cloud revenue numbers but instead grouped it with Google Play and hardware. Together, these segments contributed $3.4 billion in the last quarter. Despite the lack of transparency, Google emphasized its long-term commitment to the cloud market, and its recent hiring spree suggests serious investment in the space.

While each company has its own approach and strategy, it’s clear that the cloud computing race is far from over. Amazon still leads the way, but Microsoft and Google are closing the gap. As the demand for cloud services continues to rise, the next few years will be crucial in determining who will emerge as the ultimate winner in this high-stakes game.
