# The original innovator # into the pit after seven years — starting with the Kindle Oasis

**Reasons to Purchase** Back in 2010, when I was still a student, I used to count the amount of surplus grain in my pocket every day. But everything changed when I first heard about "e-paper books." That's when I really got into the e-reader world. At that time, Kindle wasn't yet popular in China, and the licensed market was almost nonexistent. The mainstream brands were Hanwang and South Korean companies that made MP3 players, but their prices were quite high—usually not less than 1500 yuan. I shrugged it off, thinking maybe I wasn’t ready to buy, but deep down, I planted a seed of desire. In 2011, after graduating, I joined a joint-venture car company. My first month’s salary was enough to buy my first e-reader from America and Asia — the Kindle Touch. After a long wait, customs clearance, and shipping, I finally received it. From then on, I started experimenting: rooting the device, removing screen saver ads, subscribing to RSS feeds, managing books with Calibre, and so on. For four years, I read nearly a hundred books on the Kindle Touch, including some news and literature. By the end of 2015, due to job changes and marriage, my reading time decreased. To make the most of its remaining life, I gave the Kindle Touch to my neighbor's sister. I took a two-year break from Kindle, but I never stopped missing it. Last year, when the first generation of Oasis came out, I considered buying it, but I thought the price was too high and the usage rate might not justify it. Plus, online reviews weren’t very positive, so I held back. However, I always kept an eye on the "surprise" of Kindle's tenth anniversary. Finally, during National Day, Amazon released a new version of the Oasis. It wasn’t a huge surprise, but I still decided to go for it. Maybe e-book technology isn’t making big breakthroughs right now, but the most important thing is reading — and hardware doesn’t seem to matter that much. On the morning of October 30th, I placed my order on JD.com (because of a special offer with my China Merchants Bank card that gave me 10 times the points on Wednesdays, and I also ordered some Jingdong E-cards). I received the package at noon on the 31st. If you're interested in checking out the revised review, here's the purchase link: [Purchase Link] **Appearance Gallery**

**Experience Feelings** 1) It's small and lightweight, easy to hold. Even smaller and lighter than I expected, the thinnest parts made me worry if it could survive my future abuse. 2) The hardware upgrade is obvious. The previous Kindle Touch had lag when flipping pages or entering Wi-Fi passwords, but the new Oasis runs smoothly, almost like a smartphone. While it might be a bit exaggerated to say it's as smooth as a phone, there's definitely no noticeable lag. The built-in reading light has been upgraded and adjusts brightness intelligently, feeling soft and even. The gravity sensor didn't feel very useful, but it's convenient for long reading sessions. The waterproof feature hasn't been tested yet, but I don't have any specific need for it. It's too early to give a full review, but I’ll share more experiences as I use it more. **Summary** If there's one certainty, I think the only downside is the high price. Many people argue that spending the cost of a tablet on a black-and-white screen that only reads books isn't worth it. I can't completely disagree with that, but I don't think it should be measured that way. If I need to read, I believe a tablet isn't the best choice. If you're looking for a dedicated reading device, I think this is a solid option — of course, without considering cost-effectiveness.
