Protella Releases Dual Motor Drive System and Van Huer Cooperative Electric Bus

Proterra, a leading American electric bus manufacturer, recently unveiled a groundbreaking dual-motor pure-electric powertrain system in collaboration with Van Hool, one of Europe’s top bus manufacturers. This innovative technology marks a major step forward in the development of all-electric public transportation solutions. The new powertrain is designed to deliver exceptional performance and efficiency. According to Proterra, vehicles equipped with this system can achieve an impressive range of 1,100 miles on a single charge. The announcement was made at the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) annual meeting on October 9, 2017, signaling a significant milestone in the industry. One of the standout features of the DuoPower system is its dual-motor setup, which provides a powerful output of 510 horsepower. This enables the Catalyst bus to accelerate from 0 to 20 mph in just 4.5 seconds, making it significantly faster than traditional diesel buses. The system also boosts propulsion by 26%, offering twice the performance of conventional 35- to 40-foot diesel models. Additionally, it outperforms competing electric buses by 72%, making it a strong contender for transit agencies looking for reliable and high-performing electric options. The company has emphasized durability and reliability in the design of the new powertrain, ensuring that it meets the demanding needs of urban transit systems. This innovation not only enhances the performance of electric buses but also expands the potential for electric mobility in cities around the world. Proterra's solutions are primarily focused on urban transportation, and with this advanced powertrain, the company aims to lead the transition toward cleaner and more efficient public transport. In partnership with Van Hool, they are set to launch new models such as the CX45E and CX35E, which will be based on existing diesel platforms but upgraded with Proterra's cutting-edge electric technology. Both companies expect the first units to be delivered in 2019, marking a new era in sustainable bus manufacturing.
