Apple touch feedback technology encounters patent litigation

Sina Technology News, Beijing time, February 12th morning — Touch feedback technology company Immersion has taken legal action against Apple, filing two major lawsuits. According to the reports, Apple is accused of infringing on three of Immersion’s patents related to haptic feedback technology used in the iPhone and Apple Watch. The company has also filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC), aiming to block the import or sale of products that allegedly violate its intellectual property rights. The lawsuit, filed in the Delaware District Court, names both Apple and AT&T as defendants. It claims that the iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s Plus, and Apple Watch all infringe on three key patents: 8,619,051, 8,773,356, and 8,659,571. These patents cover various aspects of touch feedback technology, which Immersion has been developing for years. In response to the allegations, Immersion CEO Victor Viegas stated, “While we are pleased to see other companies recognize the value of haptic technology and integrate it into their products, we must protect our intellectual property and the ecosystem we have built. We are continuously investing in improving the haptic experience, and we will take all necessary steps to defend our patents when they are infringed.” Apple has long used vibration-based alerts in its devices, but the introduction of more advanced haptic feedback in the Apple Watch in 2014 marked a significant step forward. Following this, the company expanded the feature to other products like the MacBook, MagicTrackpad 2, and the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, offering a more refined pressure-sensitive touch experience. Immersion is not only seeking financial compensation through these legal actions but also using the ITC complaint as leverage to push Apple toward a licensing agreement. If no settlement is reached, the company may pursue an import ban on the disputed products, further intensifying the ongoing patent battle between the two tech giants.
