The scale of China's medical service market

After searching the database of the Statistical Information Center of the National Health and Family Planning Commission, the latest China Health Yearbook is the 2013 China Health Statistics Yearbook (2013 data) released in April 2014. The Chinese Health Yearbook and China Population were released in April this year. The two yearbooks with the Family Planning Yearbook are co-edited as the China Health and Family Planning Yearbook (2014, 2013 data), and the current 2015 volume (2014 data) is still being compiled. The 2013 yearbook shows that China's total health consumption in 2013 was 3.2 trillion yuan, which has maintained a compound growth rate of 17.2% in the past 9 years.

According to the National Health Service Report issued by the National Health and Family Planning Committee and the number of national medical and health institutions at the end of April 2015, from January to April 2015, the total number of medical treatments in the national medical and health institutions reached 2.47 billion. The number of people increased by 3.3% year-on-year; as of the end of April 2015, the number of medical and health institutions nationwide reached 985,000. These data all indicate the huge scale and rapid growth rate of China's medical service market.

However, compared with the 7.7% level of high-income countries, China's health care expenditure only accounts for 5.6% of the gross national product, which is lower than that of high-income and middle-income countries. Considering the huge base of population and consumption, it is not difficult to see that there is still much room for growth in China's medical service market in the future. If the proportion of health care expenditure can reach the target of 6.5%-7% proposed by the National Health and Family Planning Commission in the "Health China 2020 Strategy Research Report" by 2020, then China's health consumption market will reach 6.2-6.7 million. The scale of 100 million yuan.

The pace of growth in supply is extremely slow relative to the rapidly growing demand for medical services. In 2013, China's total health consumption was 3.2 trillion yuan, 4.2 times that of 2004; however, the number of health institutions in 2013 was only 1.2 times that of 2004, 1.5 times for health workers, and 1.9 times for health institutions. The supply of medical services is far from sufficient, indicating that the market for development is still very large.

The scale of the global and Chinese medical device market

According to the statistics of the European Medical Device Committee, the global medical device market sales have increased rapidly from US$187 billion in 2001 to US$435.3 billion in 2011, with a compound annual growth rate of 8.82%, and the global medical device market has grown. The rate exceeded the GDP growth during the same period.

From 2000 to 2012, the overall scale of China's medical device industry increased by 10.34 times, with a compound annual growth rate of 21.50%, and the proportion of industrial added value in the national GDP increased steadily.

According to the China Medical Materials Association's "2014 China Medical Device Industry Development Blue Book", the sales volume of China's medical device market increased from 17.9 billion yuan in 2001 to 212 billion yuan in 2013, excluding the impact of price factors, which increased by 11.84 times in 13 years. In 2014, the national medical device sales volume was about 255.6 billion yuan, an increase of 43.6 billion yuan from the previous year's 211 billion yuan, with a growth rate of 20.06%.

The global consumption ratio of medicines and medical devices is about 1:0.7, while the developed countries such as Europe, America and Japan have reached 1:1.02. The global medical device market has occupied 42% of the total size of the international pharmaceutical market, and it has expanded. The total scale of China's medical device market was about 255.6 billion yuan in 2014. The total size of the pharmaceutical market is expected to be 133.6 billion yuan, and the ratio of medicines to medical consumption is 1:0.19. It is slightly lower than 1:0.2 in 2013. It can be judged that medical devices have a relatively large room for growth.
