In 2017, during the 4K (HDR) Summit, Luis Miguel GilpÃes, President of Spain Telecom, expressed the company's ambition to lead the Spanish 4K market and position Spain as a global hub for ultra-high-definition content. He emphasized that video is at the core of Telefonica’s strategy, with Movistar+ serving as the central platform for digital entertainment in Spanish households.
Movistar+ has transformed how people consume television in Spain, offering a service built on three key pillars: exclusivity, diversity, and an exceptional user experience. The platform has successfully adapted to changing consumer preferences, with nearly 40% of users no longer watching live TV. This shift highlights the growing demand for on-demand, personalized content.
GilpÃes highlighted that Spain is setting the standard for Europe, with 6 million users already on board. "We are just getting started," he said, adding that the company aims to create a unique identity through its own content rather than relying on external providers. Telefonica produces over 350 new films annually and invests heavily in original programming. One notable example is the acquisition of the popular series *Velvet*, which was developed with a 100 million euro investment. The show's ratings have far surpassed those of *Game of Thrones*, proving the strength of local storytelling.
A critical factor in this transformation is Telefonica’s advanced fiber-optic network, which the company proudly refers to as a "fiber paradise." With over 65% of Spaniards connected to high-speed broadband, the infrastructure is well-suited to support 4K streaming. GilpÃes noted that the company plans to leverage this network to make Spain a global leader in 4K technology within the next year.
The rollout of 4K will be supported by a new decoder, set to launch in the second quarter of 2018. Telefonica will also provide exclusive 4K content, including sports events and TV series, ensuring that the entire ecosystem supports the adoption of ultra-high-definition. "The future of 4K is bright, and we are committed to making it accessible and exciting for all consumers," GilpÃes concluded.
