Spain Telecom's President, Luis Miguel Gilpier, spoke at the 2017 4K (HDR) Summit about the company’s vision to dominate the growing Spanish 4K market and position Spain as a global hub for ultra-high-definition content. He emphasized that video is central to Telefonica’s strategy, with Movistar+ serving as the core of digital life for Spanish households. The service has transformed how people consume television, with nearly 40% of users no longer watching live TV. Movistar+ focuses on three key areas: exclusivity, variety, and an exceptional user experience.
"Spain is setting the standard for Europe, with 6 million users already on board, and we're just getting started," Gilpier said. "We don’t want to rely on content made by others—we want to reflect our identity and cultural DNA. We release around 350 new films each year and are actively developing our own TV productions. For example, we acquired the rights to *Velvet* from Antena 3 and have invested 100 million euros in its development. The show has outperformed even *Game of Thrones* in ratings."
A major part of this vision is built on Telefonica’s fiber-optic infrastructure, which the company proudly calls a "fiber paradise." With over 65% of Spaniards connected to high-speed fiber networks and 3.2 million homes already online, Spain is well-positioned for the next wave of digital innovation. Gilpier highlighted that this robust infrastructure will be the backbone of 4K TV expansion, aiming to make Spain a global leader in the UHD industry within the next year.
"We’re rolling out 4K decoders across the country in the second quarter of 2018," he added. "We’ll support manufacturers, provide sports events in 4K, and ensure all series are available in ultra HD. Our goal is to create a full ecosystem that makes 4K accessible and exciting. The power of fiber optics will shine through in every frame."
