In 2015, the competition among mobile phone brands reached its peak, with a significant increase in the adoption of high-end specifications. According to CINNO Research, the penetration rate of LTPS (including AMOLED display technology) panels in domestic mobile phone brands hit 37.3%. This marked a major jump in self-sufficiency, with an increase of 20% and a 14% rise in market share compared to 2014. The usage of LTPS panels among domestic brands reached 37.3%, according to data from the CINNO Research Quarterly Smartphone Panel Value Chain Report. In 2015, the combined penetration rate of LTPS and Oxide panels in domestic mobile phones was 41.8%, up by 16% compared to 2014. Figure 1: Top Display Technologies in Chinese Mobile Phones in 2015 Source: CINNO Research Quarterly Smartphone Panel Value Chain Report The adoption of AMOLED panels by domestic brands increased by 9% in 2015, driven by Samsung Display's active release of AMOLED panels. Brands like OPPO, vivo, Gionee, and Meizu played a key role in this shift. If we look at the top ten brands in China, their AMOLED panel usage is expected to grow by 9% in 2016. According to the report, OPPO used 38% AMOLED panels in 2015, the highest among domestic brands. Its total LTPS usage was 57%, up from 52% in 2014, indicating that two-thirds of its LTPS products were replaced by Samsung’s AMOLED displays. OPPO’s sales growth in 2015 exceeded 55%. Another brand, vivo, which also saw over 55% sales growth, used 24% AMOLED panels. Meizu, with a sales increase of 350%, achieved 16% AMOLED panel usage. However, Huawei’s first AMOLED phone, the MateS, did not sell well due to higher pricing, resulting in less than 2% adoption. Samsung’s AMOLED panels made a strong entry, rising from nearly zero in 2014 to become the second-largest supplier, with a 22% market share. OPPO received the most support, followed by vivo with 75% contribution. With the full operation of Tianma Xiamen’s 5.5-generation LTPS line, Tianma became the largest high-end display supplier in China, increasing its market share to 12% in the top ten smartphone brands. Shenzhen Chao and BOE also significantly boosted their LTPS supplies, leading to more than 20% of top Chinese brands using domestically produced LTPS panels, a 15% year-on-year increase.
