Volkswagen submits engine plan to German government to solve exhaust emissions

The Volkswagen Group announced on November 25, 2015 that it has proposed a technical solution for the diesel engine "EA189" to the German Federal Ministry of Automotive Transportation on the issue of non-regulatory exhaust emission regulations.

The solution proposed by Volkswagen was centrally evaluated by the German Federal Automobile Transport Agency and passed. The solution targets the 4-cylinder engines with displacements of 2.0L and 1.6L, while the technical solution for the 1.2-liter displacement 3-cylinder engine was presented at the end of November.

The 2.0L and 1.6L engines of the EA189 series will be updated with software. The 1.6L engine will be equipped with a “Flow Transformer/Flow Straightner” in front of the air volume sensor of the air intake system.

The air volume sensor is used to measure an important element of engine combustion optimization - the amount of air. The air flow converter is a mesh-like member that smoothes the turbulent flow occurring before the air amount sensor, and can improve the measurement accuracy of the air amount sensor. The time required to install the device is about 30 minutes for a 2.0L engine and less than one hour for a 1.6L engine.

The device was successfully developed thanks to advances in the simulation of complex airflows inside the getter system. Volkswagen will equip the software while optimizing the software. The company said it took a relatively simple approach, taking into account the convenience of the customer at the time of the recall.

The solution does not affect the engine's output power, performance and fuel efficiency, with the goal of achieving a variety of hazardous components to meet emissions targets. However, this has not been confirmed by whether the solution can really reach the target value.
