I recently came across the concept of a watchdog timer in PLCs and wanted to understand what it really means. A watchdog is typically divided into two types: hardware and software. The hardware watchdog uses a timer circuit that is connected to the reset pin of the system. The program must periodically reset this timer (often referred to as "feeding the dog") within a specific time frame. If the program runs normally, the timer won't overflow. However, if the program fails and doesn't reset the timer within the set timeout, the timer will overflow and trigger a system reset, effectively restarting the device. The software watchdog operates on a similar principle but uses the internal timer of the processor instead of a dedicated hardware timer. This approach simplifies the overall hardware design, but it may not be as reliable since it's dependent on the internal system clock. For example, if the internal timer fails, the watchdog might not detect the issue. Some systems use dual timers for redundancy, which adds overhead and doesn’t always solve all potential problems, such as interrupt failures or system crashes due to external interference. It's important to note that the watchdog itself isn't meant to fix underlying issues in the system. Instead, it acts as a safety mechanism to detect and recover from unexpected faults—like programming errors or environmental disturbances—without requiring manual intervention. While the watchdog can help restore normal operation, it can't completely prevent data loss during the reset process. There’s always a brief period between the fault occurring and the system resuming normal function. In some cases, systems may also need to save critical field data before a reset and restore it afterward, which can add both hardware and software complexity.
