The difference between AVS and H.264 and detailed introduction

AVS is the English abbreviation of the digital audio and video codec technical standard. It is the second-generation digital audio and video source standard developed by China and has independent intellectual property rights. It was approved as a national standard this year and officially implemented on March 1. Its coding efficiency is comparable to the competitive international standard MPEG-4 / H.264, which represents the international advanced level, and is widely used in various fields such as broadcasting, communication, television, entertainment and so on. Breaking the AVS standard provides a rare opportunity for China to build an industrial chain of “technology → patent → standard → chip and software → complete machine and system manufacturing → digital media operation and cultural industry”.

There are two major series of international audio and video codec standards: the MPEG series standards formulated by ISOIECJTC1; the H.26x series video coding standards and G.7 series audio coding standards developed by ITU for multimedia communication. In 1994, MPEG-2 developed by the cooperation between MPEG and ITU is the representative of the first generation of audio and video codec standards, and is currently the most popular audio and video standard in the world.

After more than ten years of evolution, the audio and video coding technology itself and the industrial application background have undergone significant changes, and newcomers have emerged. At present, there are four source coding standards that can be selected by the audio and video industry: MPEG-2, MPEG-4, MPEG-4 AVC (referred to as H.264, also known as JVT, AVC), AVS.

It can be speculated that MPEG-2 is about to withdraw from the stage of history due to the obsolete technology and the high charges. Who will become the standard of the digital audio and video industry in AVS and H.264? This question is unresolved, and the comparison of these two standards has become the focus of the industry.

AVS is China's second-generation source coding standard with independent intellectual property rights. As the name implies, "source" is the "source" of information. The key problem solved by source coding technology is the encoding and compression of digital audio and video massive data (ie, initial data, source), so it is also called digital audio and video codec technology. Obviously, it is the premise of the subsequent digital information transmission, storage, playback and other links, so it is the common basic standard of the digital audio and video industry. The AVS standard is the abbreviation of the "Advanced Audio and Video Coding of Information Technology" series of standards. The AVS standard includes four main technical standards, such as system, video, audio, and digital rights management, and supporting standards such as conformance testing.

H.264 is a new digital video coding proposed by the Joint Video Team (JVT: joint video team) jointly established by ITU-T's VCEG (Video Coding Expert Group) and ISO / IEC's MPEG (Moving Picture Coding Expert Group) Standard, it is both H.264 of ITU-T and MPEG-4 part 10 of ISO / IEC. And the domestic industry commonly said that MPEG-4 is the second part of MPEG-4. The H.264 standard was drafted from January 1998. By July 2003, the entire set of H.264 (ISO / IEC14496-10) specifications was finalized. In January 2005, the MPEG organization officially released the H.264 verification report, demonstrating the usability of H.264 and the effects of various tool sets from various aspects. Until its promulgation, H.264 has been the international video coding standard jointly promoted by industrial organizations such as ITU, MPEG, DVD, DVB, and 3GPP.

Compared with H.264, AVS mainly has the following characteristics: (1) high performance and the same coding efficiency as H.264; (2) low complexity, the algorithm complexity is significantly lower than H.264, software and hardware implementation The cost is lower than H.264; (3) China has the main intellectual property rights, the patent authorization mode is simple, and the cost is low.
