Facebook has been actively working with Airbus on high-altitude drone initiatives aimed at expanding internet access to remote regions. Recent reports confirm that the two companies are collaborating not only to develop these projects but also to advocate for increased radio spectrum capacity through the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). This partnership is focused on supporting high-altitude pseudo-satellite (HAPS) technology, which could revolutionize connectivity in underserved areas.
The collaboration between Facebook and Airbus might seem unusual at first, but both companies have been investing heavily in solar-powered drone systems. Facebook’s Aquila project, a solar-powered drone designed to provide internet access, has undergone several test flights. The first test in June 2016 ended in a crash after 96 minutes of flight, while the second successful test in May 2017 lasted 1 hour and 46 minutes.
Meanwhile, Airbus is testing its Zephyr T-tailed drones, which have set records by flying non-stop for up to 14 days. These long-duration flights highlight the potential of high-altitude platforms to serve as stable, cost-effective alternatives to traditional satellites.
In 2015, the World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC) passed Resolution 160, calling for the ITU to study the additional spectrum needs of HAPS systems. This initiative aims to support broader internet coverage by enabling more efficient use of radio frequencies.
Facebook recently shared on its open-source blog that it is working with Airbus to advance developments in spectrum policy and aviation regulations. The goal is to demonstrate the viability of HAPS technology in delivering internet services. While the partnership shows promise, it remains unclear how the two projects will be integrated or tested moving forward.
