In June of this year, JOLED Corporation, a subsidiary of Japan Display (JDI), announced the production of a 21.6-inch OLED panel. Recently, the company confirmed that it has started selling this innovative display. According to internal sources, the first batch of these panels will be supplied to Sony for use in medical monitors, marking a significant step in the adoption of OLED technology in healthcare.

The new 21.6-inch screen features a 4K resolution of 3840 x 2160 (204PPI), a brightness of 350 nits, and a remarkable thickness of just 1.3mm. Weighing only 500 grams, the panel showcases the advantages of OLED technology, which allows for a simpler structure compared to traditional LCDs, making it possible to achieve such slim dimensions.
This panel is set to be used in Sony’s medical monitoring systems, highlighting its potential in specialized fields where clarity and precision are critical.
Founded in August 2014 by JDI, Sony, and Panasonic, with support from the INCJ Investment Fund, JOLED has built a strong foundation in R&D and manufacturing. The 21.6-inch OLED panel produced this time utilizes a revolutionary inkjet printing technique, which reduces manufacturing costs by approximately 30% to 50% compared to traditional vapor deposition methods. This technology is also being explored by other panel manufacturers around the world.
Currently, JOLED is in talks with several global panel makers to license its production technology for TV panels, though no specific names have been disclosed. In addition, the company plans to raise 100 billion yen to expand its production capacity before the end of the year, signaling its confidence in the growing demand for OLED technology across various industries.
