Amazon AWS business grows fastest, the next step is to switch to artificial intelligence

In order to catch up with Microsoft (Micfosoft) and Google, Amazon has now joined the artificial intelligence (AI) battle, hoping to catch up with the opponent.

The Financial Times (FT) reports that Amazon's Amazon Web Services (AWS) is Amazon's fastest-growing and best-selling business, selling cloud computing and data storage services. In the past 12 months, the business revenue has grown by 60% to $11 billion, making Amazon's cloud business the number one in the world.

Amazon has invested heavily in cloud computing in the past, but now it is turning to new areas: artificial intelligence. Amazon has also launched three artificial intelligence services in the near future, and invested in the deep learning architecture MXNet, which will be the basis of its artificial intelligence in the future.

Amazon has used artificial intelligence in many businesses, including using robots in warehousing, identifying scenes in movies, and launching Alexa speech recognition services. However, the researchers pointed out that Amazon still lags behind its competitors in pure artificial intelligence research.

Oren Etzioni, an information scientist at Allen InsTItute for ArTIficial Intelligence, said that Amazon wants to catch up with other competitors, including Google and Microsoft, which have been engaged in artificial intelligence research for many years and are in a leading position, while Amazon and Apple are at Behind, but now I hope to catch up.

Etzioni said Amazon and Apple are getting stronger, but the question is how much time they need to catch up with Google and Facebook.

Amazon said that they have thousands of engineers investing in artificial intelligence, but the company talked about the relevant plans in high-profile, and there are not many related scientific papers.

AWS has previously launched three new artificial intelligence services, including image recognition, natural language understanding, and the ability to help computers read text. These services are already used internally. For example, Alexa uses Lex to handle natural language; it is now published for the first time for developers.

Matt Wood, director of product strategy at AWS, said that Amazon doesn't often talk about these things, but internally, Machine Learning has achieved many successes. He said that AWS has invested more artificial intelligence services and is expected to come out in 2017.

However, Amazon's related efforts are small teams scattered throughout. For example, engineers who develop book identification seldom touch engineers who develop artificial intelligence software, so it is difficult to produce pure research.

Amazon is considering establishing the strength of artificial intelligence through mergers and acquisitions, but there are no successful cases. Previously, Amazon had considered acquiring Turi, an artificial intelligence startup in Seattle, but Apple later succeeded in winning the bid for $200 million.

IDC software analysts estimate that at present, AWS's work is less than 1% related to artificial intelligence, but he estimates that it will grow rapidly. Hilwa believes that although Amazon is still catching up, because its AWS has a large customer base, customers will be able to use their services faster.
