Types of optocouplers and alternative methods

Optocouplers are widely used components in switching power supply circuits. They are typically categorized into two main types: nonlinear and linear optocouplers. Nonlinear optocouplers, such as the commonly used 4N series (e.g., 4N25, 4N35, 4N26, 4N36), are designed for signal isolation and are often used in digital applications. On the other hand, linear optocouplers, like the PC817A–C series, PC111, TPL521-1, and others, are used where a proportional response between input and output is required, making them suitable for analog or feedback control systems. In home appliance circuits, there are four common types of optocouplers that are frequently encountered: 1. **Type 1**: This is a standard optocoupler with an LED and phototransistor configuration. It comes in a dual-inline 4-pin plastic package. The internal circuit diagram is shown in Table 1 and is primarily used in switching power supplies. 2. **Type 2**: Similar to Type 1, this optocoupler also uses an LED and phototransistor, but it has a 6-pin dual-inline plastic package. Its internal structure is also depicted in Table 1, and it serves the same purpose in power supply circuits. 3. **Type 3**: This version includes an LED and a phototransistor with an additional terminal. It’s packaged in a 6-pin dual-inline plastic case and is mainly used in audio conversion circuits, especially in AV systems. 4. **Type 4**: This type consists of an LED, a photodiode, and a transistor with an extra terminal. It is also in a 6-pin dual-inline plastic package and is commonly used in video conversion circuits within AV equipment. Here are some examples of each type: - **Type 1**: PC817, PC818, PC810, PC812, LTV817, TLP521-1, TLP621-1, ON3111, OC617, PS2401-1, GIC5102 - **Type 2**: TLP632, TLP532, TLP519, TLP509, PC504, PC614, PC714, PS208B, PS2009B, PS2018, PS2019 - **Type 3**: TLP503, TLP508, TLP531, PC613, 4N25, 4N26, 4N27, 4N28, 4N35, 4N36, 4N37, TIL111, TIL112, TIL114, TIL115, TIL116, TIL117, TLP631, TLP535 - **Type 4**: TLP551, TLP651, TLP751, PC618, PS2006B, 6N135, 6N136 When substituting optocouplers, it's important to note that Type 1 and Type 2 are generally interchangeable, provided the pinout is correct. However, Type 3 can replace Types 1 and 2, but the reverse is not always true due to differences in internal design and functionality. Understanding these distinctions is crucial when selecting the right optocoupler for a specific application.
