[NetEase Smart News, August 28th] Artificial intelligence is proving its capabilities in fields once considered exclusive to human talent, ranging from food services to complex gaming.
Now, industry experts suggest that this technology will soon revolutionize the film industry. Professionals working on the current R&D of AI technologies predict that by 2045, Hollywood professionals may no longer play a central role in film production. They believe AI could handle tasks like editing films, filling in gaps in footage, and even creating believable human characters.
Switching to AI-driven filmmaking could save both time and money, potentially cutting tens of millions from a movie’s budget. Stephen Regelous, an Oscar-winning technologist, told a Hollywood reporter in an interview that this technique could drastically reduce costs while maintaining quality.
This technology can also generate highly accurate digital human models based on large datasets. As noted by "The Hollywood Reporter," when the producers of "Furious 7" created a digital version of the late actor Paul Walker in 2014, they theoretically could have used AI to recreate every detail of his performances, resulting in a more precise digital representation.
AI researchers are already demonstrating how they can capture the essence of characters in virtual beings. For instance, the Digital Human League recently introduced "Digital Mike," an AI-generated portrait of filmmaker Mike Seymour. In a promotional video, Digital Mike explained that the goal was to create a virtual person capable of real-time rendering—someone who could be fully interactive and rendered in 3D or VR at 90 frames per second.
While the animation process remains labor-intensive for humans, experts predict that AI will soon take over these tasks, creating not only efficiency but also more realistic character portrayals.
Chris Cannings, a director at Chaos Group Labs and a member of the Digital Human League, told "The Hollywood Reporter" that digital humans are becoming increasingly significant in the film industry.
According to a recent study by researchers at the Institute for the Future of Humanity at Oxford University and Yale University, AI is expected to outperform humans across all tasks within 45 years. A survey of 352 machine learning experts predicted that by 2024, machines will surpass humans in translation, and by 2026, they’ll be writing high school essays. By 2031, AI could handle retail jobs, and by 2049, they might pen bestselling novels. Surgeons could be replaced by robots by 2053.
Researchers estimate a 50% probability that AI will dominate all human tasks within the next 45 years, with the potential to replace all human work within 120 years. Some argue this shift could occur even sooner. While some fear negative societal impacts, only 5% of respondents believed AI could lead to catastrophic outcomes like human extinction.
Experts stress that AI relies heavily on data. "If your dataset is insufficient, it won't work," one expert noted. "The more data you have, the better the system becomes." This year, research from Oxford and Yale highlighted that within five decades, AI will excel in everything from language translation to truck driving and essay writing. The takeover in Hollywood appears to follow a similar timeline.
Regelous told "The Hollywood Reporter" that within a few decades, computers will take full control. He stated confidently that by 2045, humans would no longer hold sway over the creative process. (Selected from: DailyMail and quasi-criticism.)
