However, one innovative company is using VR to rapidly and effectively spot head injuries on the sidelines. Interestingly enough, Iowa State University has recognized the potential of this technology and plans to incorporate VR into their athletic programs.
EyeSight, developed by SyncThink—a neuroscience company out of Boston, Massachusetts—is a portable VR headset equipped with eye-tracking tech. It can detect and pinpoint signs of a concussion in under a minute. This device measures eye movement injuries and evaluates vestibular function loss (common indicators of a recent concussion). Its quick assessment capability makes EyeSight an ideal tool for clinicians working on the sidelines.
After strapping on the head-mounted display, athletes suspected of having a concussion undergo a test where they must focus on a point and move in a circular motion. During this process, the device tracks and evaluates the athlete's performance. If there’s no brain trauma, the task should be straightforward. As you can see in the images provided, the eye-movement tracking diagram appears nearly perfectly circular for healthy individuals, whereas it becomes scattered or displaced for those with concussions.
This FDA-approved headset also offers a simple method to gauge recovery times. Since it’s designed to be used regularly, clinicians can apply it multiple times to track a patient’s progress and tailor treatments accordingly.
Iowa State University plans to introduce this technology first in rugby and wrestling matches. They aim to expand its use across all their sports programs and integrate it into their concussion management strategies.
