American University will use VR heads to detect signs of concussion

It measures eye movement impairments and disruptions in vestibular function, both common indicators of recent brain trauma. Its ability to rapidly assess any form of trauma makes EyeSync an invaluable tool for medical professionals working on the sidelines. After putting on the headset, athletes suspected of having a concussion will undergo a test where they must focus on a specific point while moving in a circular motion. During this process, the device evaluates the athlete's performance. If there’s no sign of brain injury, completing the task should be straightforward. As you can see in the accompanying images, individuals without any trauma typically produce eye movement patterns that form nearly perfect circles, whereas those affected by concussions exhibit scattered or displaced traces. This FDA-approved headset also offers a convenient method for monitoring recovery progress post-injury. Since the VR device can be utilized repeatedly, healthcare providers can track improvements over time and tailor treatments specifically to each patient's needs. Iowa State University plans to introduce this technology first in rugby and wrestling matches before expanding its use across other sports programs. They aim to align these efforts with their existing concussion management protocols.
