[NetEase Smart News, August 25] Recently, Disney's research team has been working on some exciting new technologies, such as real-time voice animation, shared augmented reality systems, and cutting-edge live performance innovations. At present, researchers from Disney and the University of Massachusetts, Boston, are collaborating on neural networks capable of evaluating short stories. While these artificial intelligence models haven't yet reached the level of professional literary critics in analyzing narratives, they do attempt to predict which stories are likely to be more popular.
"Our neural network has made significant progress in forecasting story popularity," said Boyang "Albert" Li, a Disney research scientist, in a recent statement. "Although you can’t rely on them to decide the winner of your local writing contest just yet, they can serve as valuable tools for guiding future research."
The research team drew data from Quora, a social media platform, to feed into their artificial intelligence algorithms. Since many Quora responses take the form of personal narratives, reader upvotes can be seen as a reliable indicator of both popularity and narrative quality. The team gathered almost 55,000 responses, categorizing over 28,000 as stories, each averaging around 369 words. They then built multiple neural networks—some focusing on specific segments of the stories while others aimed for a holistic understanding of the narrative content. Each AI model predicts the relative popularity of individual stories.
Both types of neural networks proved more effective at gauging story popularity than traditional text-based assessments, with the overall network showing an 18% improvement over the segment-focused network.
It's not difficult to envision future iterations of this technology being utilized by film studios to select scripts for their productions. However, the current version remains in its early stages. Ideally, researchers will find ways to evaluate story quality beyond mere popularity. After all, no one wants to see another Transformers-style franchise.
