Small knowledge 分析 speaker system analysis and solution of four faults!

The speaker system is a critical component of any audio equipment, as it directly affects the overall sound quality. A typical speaker consists of several parts, including the horn, crossover (not present in full-range models), cabinet, wiring, and sound-absorbing materials. Although the speaker system has a relatively low failure rate, there are still several common issues that users may encounter. **No Sound** 1. **Disconnected Speaker or Faulty Crossover**: If the speaker cable is broken, the driver won’t receive the necessary voltage, leading to silence. While crossovers rarely fail, problems such as desoldered connections or shorted capacitors can occur. 2. **Voice Coil Damage**: To check for a broken voice coil, use a multimeter on the R×1 setting. If the resistance reads ∞, scrape off the lacquer at both ends with a small knife and measure again. If the reading remains high, the voice coil is internally broken. If the resistance is low but you hear a “click” sound, the lead might be broken, and soldering or replacing the wire could resolve the issue. 3. **Broken Speaker Lead**: Frequent movement of the cone can cause the braided wires to break. Sometimes, the cotton core remains intact, but the wire is still damaged. These wires are not commonly available, so they can be replaced with slightly longer flexible cables. 4. **Burnt Voice Coil**: If the resistance is close to 0Ω and no “click” sound is heard, the voice coil is likely burnt. Before replacement, clear any debris from the magnetic gap. Carefully insert the new voice coil into the gap, adjust its position while listening, and secure it with glue. Fill the space between the voice coil and the cone with glue and reattach the dust cover. After 24 hours, the speaker should be fully functional. **Intermittent Silence** 1. **Poor Contact**: The voice coil leads may become corroded or poorly soldered. This can cause intermittent contact, especially when the cone vibrates frequently. 2. **Broken or Shorted Voice Coil Lead**: A faulty connection can also result in no sound. 3. **Loose Output Jack or Disconnected Cable**: Issues with the power amplifier’s output jack or the speaker input line can also cause silence. **Low Volume** 1. **Degraded Magnetic Properties**: The performance of a speaker depends largely on the magnet’s strength, the cone material, and the assembly quality. You can test the magnet’s strength by touching it with a ferromagnetic object. If the magnet is too weak, the horn may need to be replaced. 2. **Loose Magnetic Core**: If the magnetic core becomes loose, it can pull the voice coil sideways, affecting sound quality. During maintenance, gently press the cone—if it feels uneven, disassemble and re-adhere the core. 3. **Faulty Crossover**: Components in the crossover, such as capacitors or inductors, can block certain frequency ranges, resulting in muffled or distorted sound. Check for shorted capacitors or inductors in the crossover circuit. **Abnormal Sound** 1. **Debris in the Gap**: Foreign objects in the magnetic gap can cause the voice coil to rub against them, resulting in a harsh or distorted sound. 2. **Misaligned Voice Coil**: If the voice coil is not centered, it may rub against the core, causing distortion. Adjust or replace the voice coil during repairs. 3. **Damaged Cone**: A torn or damaged cone can significantly affect sound quality. If the damage is extensive, replace the cone with a slightly thinner paper or another durable material. 4. **Poor Cabinet Sealing**: An improperly sealed cabinet or a loosely attached mesh cover can cause unwanted noise or cracking during playback. Thin panels may also resonate, creating additional distortion. Ensure the cabinet is well-constructed and properly sealed for optimal performance.
