Its founder, Liu Jingfeng, is a Silicon Valley returnee with a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. He was also selected as part of China's "Thousand Talents Program."
Liu founded Shenmu after leading a team back to China in 2010, initially working on smart grid communication systems. Over time, the team expanded into facial and object recognition, eventually establishing DeepCam, a company dedicated to computer vision and AI research. They also set up a Biometrics Research Lab at Carnegie Mellon and became a founding member of the National Natural Science Foundation's Big Learning Center.
Liu's academic background, combined with his global industry insights, attracted investors like Heli Investment, which saw his vision and capabilities as key factors in their decision to invest.
Shenmu has developed leading algorithms in face feature extraction, gesture recognition, object recognition, and OCR. Their technologies include occlusion face restoration, large-pose face recognition, and a 1.5 million 3D face database. Their model training efficiency is 400 times faster than similar products, giving them a significant edge over competitors.
Shenmu has been rapidly expanding its reach, offering efficient technical solutions across various industries. Its smart city solutions are already being implemented in public safety systems nationwide, improving surveillance and reducing police workload. The company’s dynamic facial recognition system supports existing cameras, enhancing security and enabling real-time tracking and identification.
Beyond public safety, Shenmu has expanded into new retail, smart tourism, and healthcare. In the U.S., they’ve secured contracts with convenience stores and banks, helping to reduce theft and improve customer analytics. Their systems can identify suspicious behavior and alert staff, saving thousands in losses.
In domestic retail, Shenmu’s facial recognition systems track customer demographics, helping businesses analyze shopping patterns and optimize store layouts. Future plans include integrating facial recognition with unmanned stores, allowing customers to enter, shop, and exit without manual payment.
