British scientists study predicting earthquakes with AI: forecast in the future or one week in advance

On October 29th, experts have long believed that earthquakes could one day be predicted. With the rapid advancement of machine learning technology, scientists are now more confident than ever that this breakthrough is within reach. This optimism comes from a recent development: researchers have created a robot capable of "listening" to rocks. When certain types of rock are subjected to increasing pressure—similar to what happens before an earthquake—they emit a low, rumbling sound. A research team at the University of Cambridge in the UK has been simulating the effects of powerful earthquakes on rocks in the lab. Using a newly developed AI system, they are able to detect early warning signals that indicate an impending major quake. These stress responses typically occur about a week before an earthquake, giving scientists valuable time to prepare. The co-author of the study, Professor Colin Humphreys from the Department of Materials Science at Cambridge, said, “People often claim that earthquakes cannot be predicted, and many have tried without success. We believe we’ve made a historic first by successfully predicting an earthquake in the lab.” The AI system can detect the faint sounds emitted by rocks as stress builds up. As the earthquake approaches, these sounds grow louder, allowing for more accurate predictions. Such advancements could save countless lives by providing early warnings. Researchers are also working to determine the potential magnitude of future quakes. Bertrand Rouet-Leduc, the lead author and a Ph.D. student at Cambridge, remarked, “We are living in an extraordinary time. With better instrumentation, machine learning, more powerful computers, and improved data processing capabilities, scientific progress in earthquake research is accelerating rapidly.” This groundbreaking work highlights how artificial intelligence is transforming the field of seismology, bringing us closer to a future where devastating earthquakes may no longer come as complete surprises.
