A team from the University of Cambridge in the UK has been conducting experiments where they simulate the effects of major earthquakes on rock samples in the lab. Using a newly developed AI system, they are able to identify early warning signals that suggest a large earthquake may be imminent. These stress responses typically occur about a week before an actual seismic event, giving scientists valuable time to prepare and warn communities.
Colin Humphreys, a professor of materials science at the university and co-author of the study, remarked, “People often say earthquakes can't be predicted, and they've tried many times without success. But we believe we’ve made a historic breakthrough by successfully predicting an earthquake in the lab for the first time.â€
The AI system is designed to detect the subtle sounds emitted by rocks as stress builds up. As the earthquake approaches, these sounds grow louder, allowing the system to make accurate predictions. Such early warnings could save countless lives. Researchers are also working to determine the potential magnitude of an upcoming quake, which would further enhance preparedness efforts.
Bertrand Rouet-Leduc, the lead author of the study and a Ph.D. student at Cambridge, said, “We’re living in an incredible time.
