AnalogicTech Introduces Direct and Edged LED Backlight Driver Series; Develops LED Backlit LCD TV Strategy Roadmap
Advanced Analogic Technologies, Inc. (AnalogicTech) (Nasdaq: AATI), an analog semiconductor company dedicated to introducing innovative solutions in the consumer, industrial and communications markets, is announcing the entry into the LED-backlit LCD TV market and will begin to develop innovative power supplies. Managed semiconductor systems and released the first family of chipsets that significantly enhance the energy efficiency and user experience of LED-backlit LCD TVs as part of their market expansion and diversification strategy.

"The launch of these new products targeting the LED-backlit TV market marks our determination to continue to deliver innovative solutions to save energy and provide the best user experience," said Richard Wilsons, CEO of AnalogicTech. “We have a seamless integration of ModularBCD-based LED drivers into the high-end handset design of large handset manufacturers. We have the experience to provide an innovative solution that delivers the same high performance and energy efficiency in the LED-backlit LCD TV market. Program."

In direct/dot matrix backlighting applications, the intelligent control of the LED current sink provides precise brightness based on the image portion and provides viewers with a more pure black color while improving contrast for better and better Natural viewing effect. Dynamic LED backlighting also meets the increasingly stringent energy consumption standards of large flat panel TVs, such as those that California is considering.

“The unique design and process advantages of our autonomous ModularBCD process enable the effective integration of low voltage digital circuits and high voltage analog circuits. This combination enables dynamic management of high current and high voltage LED current sinks and significantly reduces energy consumption ," Williams added.

As the first entry point into the LED TV market, AnalogicTech has launched seven new products:

LED driver module for direct/dot matrix backlight

AAT2403 (16 channel) latch LED driver module

Edge-type backlight dedicated LED driver module

AAT2405 PWM with Phase Shift (6 Channel) LED Driver Module

AHK2417E (8 channel) latch LED driver module

AHK2418E (16 channel) latch LED driver module

DC/DC boost controller

AAT2404 High Voltage Boost Controller

These devices utilize AnalogicTech's patent-pending “multi-chip voltage anti-sonic technology to ensure that the correct LED supply voltage is simultaneously controlled between up to 16 chipsets (or 256 channels), supporting up to 2560 in direct or dynamic backlighting schemes Precise control of LEDs and up to 16 channels in edged solutions.

AnalogicTech's direct/dot matrix backlighting solution

The AAT2400/01 and AAT2402M/S chipsets produce a 16-channel high current LED driver module that supports up to 10 LEDs in a single string mode. Each master and slave channel contains 8 high voltage current sinks capable of absorbing up to 100 mA/channel. Up to 16 chipsets (or 256 channels) can be addressed and controlled sequentially when using the SPI interface. Each channel has 8-bit DOT error correction, 12-bit grayscale, 12-bit delay, and switch control. It also has the function of preventing LED overvoltage, short circuit or open circuit, over temperature and over current, and the information is reported by the SPI bus using the fault flag. To power the LED string, the AAT2400 and AAT2402M include a boost converter with an integrated lateral TrenchDMOS output that utilizes current sink information from each channel to ensure that the output voltage correctly biases all LED strings regardless of the LED forward voltage.

The AAT2403 is a dedicated 16-channel high current LED driver module that drives LEDs in a single string powered by an external boost or buck converter. Each current sink can absorb up to 100 mA/channel. Up to 16 chipsets (or 256 channels) can be addressed and controlled sequentially when using the SPI bus interface. Each channel has 8-bit DOT error correction, 12-bit grayscale control, 12-bit delay and switch control. In addition, the AAT2402 master and slave chipsets have LED overvoltage, short or open, over temperature and overcurrent functions, and the information is reported via the SPI bus using the fault flag.

AnalogicTech's edge backlighting solution

The AAT2405 (6-channel) edge-lit backlight driver module can be paired with the AAT2404 high-voltage boost controller to provide a configurable solution for edge LCD backlighting. The AAT2405 has a simple adjustable phase delay that can be configured as a 2, 3, 4 or 6 channel drive module depending on the number of LED strings per strip. The AAT2405 uses internal current sensing to eliminate the need for high voltage and high cost external sensing resistors. Each output can be regulated up to 150 mA/channel with +/- 2.5% accuracy and matching. These devices can be used to cascade multiple LED strings and maintain proper PWM and phase information through inter-IC communication.

In addition, products for edge applications include AHK2417E (8 channels) and AHK2418E (16 channels). This solution is used in systems with up to 100 mA/channel LED output current with +/- 2.5% accuracy and matching. This chipset features integrated LED short-circuit or open-circuit, overvoltage, overcurrent, and overtemperature fault protection and is reported over the SPI bus.

DC/DC boost controller

The AAT2403 is a DC-DC boost controller IC that operates from an input voltage of 12 volts or 24 volts and boosts the voltage based on the number of LEDs in the string. The AAT2404 integrates a high speed, low impedance gate drive module IC that provides up to 3.2 amps of output current with an external MOSFET. The AAT2404 is directly connected to the current sink feedback pin of the LED backlight driver module to provide the correct string voltage.

Powerful and innovative solutions in the TV market

In addition to the new LED backlight driver module product line, AnalogicTech also introduced plans to provide a comprehensive power management solution for the TV market, including, for example, improvements to AnalogicTech's existing Class D audio power amplifier products. Product development is still in progress and products will be rolled out in the coming months.

“The adoption of these new technologies is driven by three main factors: eliminating environmental regulations for mercury CCFLs used in backlights, reducing white LED prices in a way that LED backlight costs are comparable to CCFLs, and consumers want a better viewing experience. "Phil Dewsbury, director of product line for display and lighting products, said. “With today's released products and improved routes, we are able to provide the best system solutions for the TV market to fulfill our commitment to energy efficiency and improved user experience.”
