The biggest highlight of the conference was that Musk launched a new roof solar tile. Unlike all existing products, he directly integrates solar panels and roof tiles. In other words, Musk brought his "solar tiles."

At the launch of the conference, there were four houses with different types of "solar roofs". Musk gave a demonstration and said: "A solar roof, an energy storage system and an electric car. The model can be extended to the whole world."
Undoubtedly, in Musk's view, to fully promote solar energy, three conditions must be met—beautiful, economical, and highly integrated. From the current point of view, at least the two values ​​of value and integration should not be too big.
Regarding the price of the solar roof, Musk did not give a direct explanation at the press conference, but said that it would definitely be cheaper than an ordinary roof plus electricity.
Musk believes that there are currently 45 million new roofs in the United States, and this number will be 20 times larger worldwide. And as more and more roofs are refurbished, more and more people will use solar roofs.
“I hope that one day, after making a new house, people say to their neighbors, 'Look! How cool is my roof!'†Musk said. “But this should not be possible in the past. thing."
Undoubtedly, from the current point of view, Tesla has only three products to be done – solar roofs, large-capacity batteries and electric vehicles. The future blueprint for Musk is to use rooftop solar energy to charge electric vehicles and create an end-to-end clean energy system.
For a long time, electric vehicles have been difficult to promote and popularize due to their long charging time and small radius of activity. The problem of inconvenient use has also been encountered in the promotion of solar energy. However, since Tesla has made the electric car more recognized, it seems that Musk still wants to insist on using his unique way to promote solar energy.
Musk said that although many people think that Tesla is an electric car company, the ultimate goal of this company is to promote the development of renewable energy.
Another key to achieving this vision is the home storage system. As we all know, most renewable energy sources have intermittent problems of power generation. To solve this problem, energy storage batteries have become the key.
Another key point of Musk's press conference was Tesla's new Powerwall 2.0 household energy storage battery, which is actually a functional upgrade to the first generation.
In contrast, Powerwall 2.0's performance has nearly doubled, 14 k Wh of storage capacity, rated output power of 5kW, built-in inverter (turning DC to AC), easy to install, can guarantee a two-bedroom apartment A full day of electricity, currently priced at $ 5,500.
According to the official website, the battery can be installed indoors or outdoors, operating at temperatures ranging from minus 20 to 50 degrees Celsius, weighing 110 kilograms, and extending up to 9 powerwalls in parallel.
In addition, for large companies and even solar power plants, Tesla also provides a dedicated Powerpack system, which will be more scalable.
Musk said that they are currently building the largest energy storage system on Earth for Southern California Edison, and the Powerpack will have a maximum energy storage capacity of 80MWh. In addition, they plan to build a 52MWh battery pack for solar power plants on Kauai.
“However, I believe that large-scale solar power plants and local power generation in each household must develop at the same time,†Musk said. “The electricity from the power station will lose 2/3, one third of which comes from heat, and the other 3 is from the transmission itself."
The best way for each household to generate electricity locally is to put the solar panels on the roof. This is also the ultimate reason why Musk decided to acquire Solarcity and eventually integrate power generation, storage and electricity (electric vehicles).
In order to produce lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles and Powerwall and Powerpack systems, Tesla spent $4 billion to build a super factory "Gigafactory" in the Nevada desert.
Currently, Tesla's vehicles are powered by Panasonic batteries, and the advanced lithium batteries produced by Gigafactory are more refined and cheaper. Tesla has said that by 2017, the electricity cost per kWh of Tes electric vehicles will be reduced by more than 30%.
It is undeniable that the clean energy system of the roof solar tile, the household energy storage system and the electric vehicle trinity is indeed a beautiful vision.
But now it seems that this vision may be just a one-man show of a few dreamers. Whether at the technical or commercial level, the ultimate realization of this vision will undoubtedly take a long time.
In all fairness, every release of Musk will throw a surprising product. However, this conference may have other purposes. At the point in time, this man was specially hired before the shareholders' vote on November 17 this year to decide the merger of Tesla and Solarcity.
