Broadcom (Broadcom) today announced its entry into the application processor market. The first release of the BCM2820 is a stand-alone, high-efficiency system-on-a-chip that combines the industry-leading Broadcom® VideoCore® multimedia processor with an ARM11® application processor. The BCM2820 fully supports the current operating system, Linux®, and is especially suited for high-volume products, including mobile phones, mobile TV, portable video/game devices, and has unprecedented integration, multimedia performance and low power consumption.

Due to the popularity of multimedia functions built into mobile phones and other portable devices, there is an urgent need in the market for price control within the mainstream consumer burden for advanced applications in imaging and photography. The new BCM2820 application processor offers a wide range of multimedia features, including an 8 megapixel digital camera with 30 frames per second MPEG-4/H.264 VGA image decoding and encoding. The NTSC/PAL TV output signal is transmitted through the AV terminal, the color difference terminal, and the S terminal (separate video terminal input).

Alan Varghese, Principal Investigator at the ABI Research Center, points out that the market for mobile application processors will exceed $5.5 billion in 2007. Broadcom's market-leading image processor, well-respected mobile technology and software development make the company a significant competitor in this market.

The BCM2820 integrates industry-standard interfaces and tightly coupled software drivers and stacks to support a wide range of wireless interfaces, including Broadcom's 3G EDGE, WEDGE and HEDGE mobile baseband processors, and 802.11x WLAN processors. Bluetooth solutions, etc. Wireless transmission technology is driving the next wave of advanced wireless multimedia devices, requiring more sophisticated next-generation wireless device software to ensure that these cutting-edge multimedia features have the best battery life and full interoperability.

Mark Casey, Vice President and General Manager of Broadcom Mobile Multimedia Group, said: BCM2820's major breakthrough in technology integration has benefited mobile phone and portable media player developers, as Broadcom introduced VideoCore technology to the application processor market, simplifying The development of a generation of mobile wireless devices while saving space, saving power and optimizing performance.

The BCM2820 application processor chip released today is based on the Broadcom image processing engine VideoCore and is similar to the existing BCM27xx multimedia processor family, so all the chip-related software of the BCM27xx family is compatible with the new BCM2820. Both the 27xx and 28xx series are fully programmable and capable of handling a wide range of audio and video formats, providing the ultimate in scalability and resiliency of Broadcom OEM partners. The programmability of VideoCore technology helps developers programmatically or reprogram different applications, rather than adding new chip designs to new mobile products.

The BCM28xx series integrates an embedded microprocessor core ARM11 as the main processor for advanced mobile device applications, such as mail sending and receiving, web browsing, file management and graphical user interface. This is the BCM28xx and previous BCM27xx products. The main difference between. Unlike competing products, Broadcom's embedded ARM core has a top speed of 300MHz, and VideoCore handles up to 6 billion multimedia instructions per second. When the two are matched, the processing speed is usually below 200MHz. In fact, when playing H.264 movies only, the BCM2820 only needs to be executed at 10MHz speed, showing the ultimate power saving performance.

The BCM2820 application processor handles most software applications and operating systems in major mobile devices. In addition to the BCM2820 components, Broadcom offers many Linux multimedia software such as WLAN and Bluetooth stacks, video CODECs such as MPEG4, H.264, Windows® Media, MP3, 3D audio and sound visualization, slideshow, video editing. Applications, 3D image acceleration, visual digital cameras, WMDRM, MTP, PlaysForSureTM, and drivers that support mobile baseband modems.

In addition to the open operating system, the BCM2820 features a wide range of capabilities, while leveraging Broadcom's industry-leading multimedia and communications technologies such as EDGE/WCDMA/HSDPA baseband processors, mobile multimedia, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi® Compatible with VoIP and more.

The BCM2820 is now sampling to customers who have consulted early, with a unit price of $19 per 10,000 purchases. Broadocm also offers a comprehensive BCM2820 development kit that includes a Linux motherboard support package (BSP) and a complete multimedia codec Codecs and application software to accelerate OEM product development.
